    • Chronic multifocal osteomyelitis

    Category: Musculoskeletal
Prevalence 333 cases in the US (Buch 2018). Female/Male ratio: No data.
Age of Onset Onset typically occurs between ages 9 and 10.
Description Chronic multifocal osteomyelitis (CRMO) occurs due to an immune system attack on the bones, which has not yet been deemed autoimmune or autoinflammatory in nature, which causes periodic episodes of inflammation of the bones. CRMO is a non bacterial type of osteomyelitis that is considered when bacterial options have been ruled out.

CRMO most commonly affects the long bones as well as the pelvis or spine. This disease can also be diagnosed along with inflammatory bowel disease or psoriasis. CRMO usually occurs in children and can cause bone deformities or slow growth in children. Although there is no cure for CRMO, treatments involved medications such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications, antirheumatic drugs, biologics, and more.

Chronic non-bacterial osteomyelitis (CNO) is a rare auto-inflammatory bone disorder with a prevalence of around one in a million patients. In the more severe form, it is referred to as chronic recurrent multifocal osteomyelitis (CRMO).

Not confirmed as an autoimmune or autoinflammatory disease.

Data Source: Graphs on this page represent data in electronic health records and self-reported survey results from the All of Us research database. As of July 2024, there are 451,000 sets of electronic health records and over 560,000 participants who have completed initial survey questions. This dataset, however, may not be representative of the US population. A snapshot of the data can be found here. To protect participant anonymity, results derived from fewer than 20 participants are not graphed.

Data Source: Graphs on this page represent data in electronic health records from the All of Us research database. As of July 2024, there are 451,000 sets of electronic health records collected from participants. In the United States, because electronic health records use billing codes for diagnoses, some conditions may not be perfectly captured by these data, especially if the condition is rare. A snapshot of the data can be found here. To protect participant anonymity, results derived from fewer than 20 participants are not graphed.
